Retroverse Preview

Hey Game fans, we’re back with another article on one of our favorite topics, Dungeons and Dragons. Now our good friends over at Lasers and Liches (website here) are gearing up for a Kickstarter to launch their Retroverse campaign setting (officially launches on April 10th, so save your pennies). It’s an homage to neon lights, synth music, and a reality where everything is possible. Over the weekend they were nice enough to release a free preview for some of the stuff that’s coming with that setting. (You can find that preview here). Let’s talk about the themes we’re seeing so far, and talk about a couple of things.

Today we got a look at four variant dragonborn subtypes native to the setting, a new class, the Holo-knight, a new background, the mercenary, some new creature modifiers, spells for the holo knight and some new critters to try and kill. There are also a couple of new magical items, and a new deity to worship. It’s a packed sampler of the materials to come, and the impression i get is that i want to see more.

A sampler like this does a couple of things that i want to see when someone rolls out a new campaign setting. First, it shows me new variations on things i’m familiar with and how my traditional take on fantasy fits into this setting. The variant dragonborn are neat, and i want to see more takes on more traditional fantasy ideas.

The holo-knight feels like a dungeons and dragons class, but has the neat advantage of i’m not sure what it replaces in the traditional fantasy catalog of tropes and ideas. It’s a spellcaster with access to some potent magics while still being able to fight with other front line characters. It’s got a host of abilities that seem different from things we’ve seen before, but overall it creates an interesting playstyle.

These are the sorts of things i look for when we see a new campaign setting and i’m honestly interested in getting more details about the game. I would like to know a little more about the degree you can mesh Retroverse themes with more traditional D & D settings. Some of these things feel like they’d feel out of place in the type of a world most of us think of when someone says Dungeons and Dragons, but some of it feels like it could work.

The monsters look fun, and any setting that creates a not “Pac-man” as one of its deities is certainly an interesting place to look around. I think this setting could be fun to play in, even if you don’t know what Retro means (in the context of the setting). It’s going to be a fun time, and I will be putting money into this kickstarter when it releases.

The guys at Lasers and Liches are putting together a full tilt campaign leading up to the campaign, so if you want to get a look at the setting and the mechanics, there are a ton of choices for you to do that. Oh, a special note, be sure to check out the amazing art put together by Lluis Abadias. It’s an exceptional vision of what this universe should look like, and i can’t wait to see what they put together.

That’s our quick preview, and we hope that gets you interested in the new setting.
